Recently, the recruitment industry has been suffering greatly in the recession; jobs are at risk, and recruiters are under an even greater amount of pressure to exceed their large KPI targets, delivering an apparently unachievable amount of revenue for their employers. Of course, many employers are in survival mode, and are only concerned with their bottom-line profits. They'll do whatever it takes to keep their company profitable - which may include job cuts, salary cuts, changes to commission structures, cancelling bonuses, lowering staff hours, and many other solutions. All this can make for a very pressured work environment for the recruiter, where the focus ends up being on pure volume, as opposed to the delivery of quality-based results.
In the good years, volume may have been enough to ensure results - but right now, the industry is changing, with neither clients or candidates prepared to accept anything less than a very high level of service in return for their time and commitment. When clients are recruiting, they know there will be a fee involved for using agencies, but nowadays they want to see extremely high value in return for their money. Many agencies don't have a strategy for these circumstances, so we're likely to see many more job cuts and a continued decline in clients' opinion of agencies.
